Translation to American
Imagine for a moment you’re a company president. You submit a board report on company mission to the newsletter, and the next day you get this in email from the editor:
“Sorry John, our readers won’t understand this. It’s written in executive jargon. OK for the boardroom, but confusing to our employees. We don’t have internal resources to re-write, so let’s bring in a good freelancer. . .”
Strange as it may sound, there’s often a need to translate copy into neutral American vernacular, the familiar language we speak daily, even though it was technically written in English. Copy for everyday people works better when it’s ordinary and friendy.
Maybe your problem document is an HR policy in corpo-speak, or a product instruction sheet for a globally-sourced product that was written in pidgin English. Or web site help files that are so geeky they sound like radio waves from alien planets. A recipe may be Spanish cuisine, but when written in good American, it leaves the flavors and aromas to the food.
I’ll transform your non-American text into easy-reading native language that will stroke your US audience the way they prefer. Your message will be more effective. Americans just hear better when addressed in ‘American.’
